Ram Island Ledge Light Station, as it is officially known, is located atop a series of rocks serving as a breakwater at the entrance to Casco Bay near Portland harbor.
Since I am lucky enough to live in Portland, Maine, I have been able to pass by Ram Island Lighthouse frequently by ferry which has allowed me to photograph it many times.
Before Ram Island Lighthouse was built, it was the sight of numerous shipwrecks, despite the iron rod erected on the site to attempt to warn ships of the dangerous Ram Island Ledge.
I wanted to convey the dangers this lighthouse warned about, so for this painting I depicted a stylized roiling and tumultuous ocean with a dramatic sky contrasting dark clouds and sunlight to represent the unpredictable nature of life at sea.
