I first visited Cape Neddick Lighthouse in 2009. I was on my way to New Hampshire early in the morning and had already stopped at Portland Head Light to take picture of it at Sunrise. Nubble Light had been on my list to visit and I had my camera on my so I decided to take the detour to visit it and hopefully capture it in the same morning light.
Cape Neddick Lighthouse is also known as “Nubble Light” because of its location on Nubble Island immediately off the cost of York, Maine. It is one of the most famous lighthouses in the world. It’s such a classic example of a quintessential lighthouse that a photograph of it was included in the collection of earth’s most prominent landmarks on the Voyager spacecraft.1
The lighthouse is a little out of the way, but still less than an hour from downtown Portland, Maine. You can’t get to the lighthouse itself but there is a great lookout point in Soiher Park. If you visit at low tide you will get a feel for the rugged and rocky coastline the lighthouse has warned mariners about since 1879.
About the Artwork
This painting was done during a time when I was experimenting with applying watercolor washes over detailed pencil drawings. Pictured below is the completed drawing, then the drawing with the watercolor washes applied over it.
