Located in Cranberry Isles, Maine

I painted this lighthouse in 2014 before I started my project of visiting and painting all of Maine’s lighthouses. Bear Island Light is privately owned so the only way to see it is from the water, but in this case that was very fortunate. The view from the water looking up at the lighthouse sitting above steep cliffs made for a very dramatic view. I do remember thinking at this time how much fun it would be to see all the lighthouses from the water. I believe this is where the idea of visiting every Maine lighthouse got started.
Bear Island Lighthouse sits high atop one of the five islands that are incorporated as the town of Cranberry Isles, Maine. It is near the entrances to Northeast Harbor and Mount Desert Harbor. The lighthouse was rebuilt a couple of times, with he current lighthouse and lightkeeper’s house was built in 1889. It is a family owned and not open to the public.
